How do you communicate with other people online?

Texting? Social media?

Although these are hugely popular (even video conferencing is gaining traction), do you know what is the most effective way to reach prospects for products and services marketed over the internet?

Believe it or not, it’s good old email.

(I’m old fashioned so I prefer email, too!)

Email is the second step in an internet marketing campaign. After a cold prospect says yes to your offer, they join your list. You can now send them more offers via email, usually in an automated drip sequence.

Most people don’t think to do this. When they want more traffic to their website, they go looking for new people and forget the people who are right under their nose.

If you know how to send out offers by email, you get more mileage from your marketing. Instead of just sending people one offer and then leaving them alone, you send them offers again and again. You get repeat buyers instead of one-time buyers.

But it’s not as simple as sending out a simple link to your site. You do need to work a little harder to gain somebody’s trust. It’s very easy for prospects to either delete your email without opening it or ignore it altogether.

What is Email Marketing?

Email marketing is a channel of internet marketing that, put simply, is about sending people emails.

The ultimate purpose of a marketing email is usually to get the reader to click on a link that might lead to a product or just a piece of free content. There’s a real art to this.

Writing the emails, however, is just one side of it. It’s illegal to send marketing emails without permission, so the other side to email marketing is building a list of email addresses that you can send to. This is usually done on a website with a squeeze page or a box on the side of the content. Then it’s just a matter of getting traffic onto the squeeze page.

In this free and comprehensive email marketing tutorial, you’ll learn:

  • the history of email marketing
  • who does email marketing
  • how to get started with email marketing
  • the best email marketing tools
  • the best email marketing training.

How to Get Started with Email Marketing

First, get your tools set up. You will need software to manage your list and send out your emails. You’ll need a separate piece of software to do your squeeze page. Then you’ll need to invest in some training because there is a way to do email marketing right and a way to do it wrong.

Do email marketing wrong and your subscribers will either not open your emails, not click on the links in your emails or unsubscribe altogether.

Finally, armed with the tools and the training, put together a strategy. Are you going to use an autoresponder sequence or broadcasts or both? How frequent will your emails be? What kind of content is going to be in your emails? This will vary depending on your business and your niche.

The Back Story

Learn about how this product, person or method came to be.

In the early days, email marketing happened through ezines. An ezine (short for electronic magazine) was a variety of content on a specific subject for a specific audience, sent out periodically by email.

Ezine publishers would either write their own content or source it from sites such as Ezine Articles, where writers would release their articles for free in return for a credit link back to their own website. They would usually monetize their ezines by accepting sponsored content, the precursor to modern solo ads.

The idea of owning media, plus advances in technology, led to a switch away from advertising in ezines and towards building your own list and sending out your own content and promotions periodically.

When Tom Kulzer launched AWeber in 1998, it was the first software that enabled autoresponder emails. This became the industry standard, and software today features much more sophisticated capabilities such as segmentation, automation and dynamic email sequences.

It’s a well known fact that email open rates have gone down in recent years. This is believed to be because people are getting too many emails to read, the novelty of receiving emails has worn off and people have come to expect marketing emails to simply contain promotions they’re not interested in reading.

In January 2017, a recent phishing attack has been going around for Gmail users. It involves email attachments. When you try to open one, you’ll get a convincing login box that is actually fake and sends your personal info to the attackers.

Related Software

To send out your emails, you can’t use Gmail or Outlook. Your email address will likely get suspended or banned, or at least your emails will fail to make it into people’s inboxes. You must use software that is specifically designed for email marketing. Below are some of the industry leading email marketing solutions:

  • AWeber
  • GetResponse
  • MailChimp
  • Ontraport
  • Infusionsoft

Due to laws about spam, you have to include a valid physical address within every marketing email you send out.

Related Traffic

The most common way to source traffic through email marketing is by paying to have your email sent out to someone’s list. This is called a solo ad.

Solo ad sellers are very diverse but it’s somewhat of a cottage industry, meaning the sellers are usually solo operators (that’s why they’re called solo ads) rather than more solid companies. That means there’s a higher risk of getting a lemon or poor service, so you need to know who to work with.

Here are the best traffic sources for if you are doing your internet marketing according to this system.
